WIN ONE FOR THE TIPPER!*

Hope you all got a chance to see the political extravaganza on TV last week.
It sure had some great lines.

"The only thing a First Lady has ever had named after her is a rehab center."
"A woman has only as much power as she can convince a man to give her."

No, we're not talking about the Democrat's convention. We are describing, "Running Mates," a TV movie starring Tom Selleck. The first part of this movie was redolent with the word bitch -- it was said by women referring to other women. Tom played a presidential candidate who was faced with the temptations of big money, and supported by the women he slept with. Actually, that was one of the funniest parts. The women, including his wife, got together and compared notes. If you missed it watch for a TNT rerun. Remember, this is a contemporary portrayal of women in politics.  :- (

The Democrat's Convention, held in L.A. last week, was a study in contrasts. President Clinton managed to get the media all upset because they never found out about his exciting entrance and therefore could not spoil its effect by telling the world about it several hundred times before it happened.

If you happened to miss it, here's what happened. After he was introduced, a camera picked him up walking down one hallway after another. As he progressed, messages flashed on the screen near his feet. Each one recounting an accomplishment by the Clinton/Gore team. He emerged from the hallways onto the stage to a standing ovation.

Throughout the convention, the media gave us a preview of the spin that the GOPsters had already given them, along with the key words they were to use. They are determined to use propaganda and a willing media to divide Democrats.

        • One of these key words that we will hear often is attacked. It will be used to describe what Democrats say when they point out how their agenda differs from that of the GOPsters. Many newspapers used this word to headline their report of Senator Lieberman's acceptance speech.

        • The media already primed with words of failure for Al Gore, is being fed more raw meat. You will hear their spin on every newscast, talk show and commentary. It is the mantra they started some time ago and it intensified during the Democrat's convention.

          "No one likes Al Gore," "Bush is very popular";
"Gore is wooden," "Bush is comfortable in his skin,"
just to name a few. Watch for variations on these themes.

        • They will claim that blacks are at odds with Lieberman over Affirmative Action. This continues even following interviews with members of the Black Caucus who all denied there are any problems. Already the faithful are calling in to local talk/hate radio to claim that blacks are furious at the Lieberman choice.

        • They are claiming that Democrats and Independent voters reject the label of liberal. Following the "Kennedy Night for Liberals", the GOPsters are loudly claiming and, of course, the media is repeating, that it caused a drop in the polls for Gore.

        • On national media, with the exception of Jim Hightower and Paul Begala, you will be hard pressed to hear anything favorable about the Democratic ticket, and the air time for these men is limited. Contrast this with interviews of several minutes given to the dissing of Gore by multiple airheads who are all reading from the same script.

        • Bush and company know this and count on it. Note that when he finally agreed to debates, he rejected Election Commission Debate Rules that would designate the debate protocol. The Commission schedules times and places for debates that would be carried on most TV outlets. Bush opted for debates hosted by individual cable stations, thus avoiding a mass audience. In addition, because of his privileged relationship with most TV media, he would surely get a heads up on the questions to be asked.

How can all of this be countered? First it would be great if we could persuade the media to criticize Bush and his defects with the same intensity and frequency that it does Gore. Failing that since we have such limited funds and therefore limited voice, we can spread the word through our emails and web sites, especially to other women.

We must get angry. Women now are in the majority on the web 51%. We MUST use this advantage. COMMUNICATE! Use your sig file. Send a positive statement with every e-mail you write.

The GOPsters have no honorable way to cover up the ignorance of Bush and the stark difference between him and the great record, EXPERIENCE and intelligence of Gore. They seek to fool the voting public with red herrings and divide Gore/Liberman supporters.

          * We stole the title of this article from the humorist-in-chief, our next VP, Joe Lieberman. He also told a story about trickle down economics (a Reagan plan, if you remember, that claimed that if you supported the rich the benefits would trickle down to us poor folk). Joe's story: "The Republicans have the idea that you can get food to the birds by feeding more oats to the horses.  :- D
