MANNA FROM THE OFFAL OFFICE

Dubya has announced his grand scheme to unite religion [his, of course] and politics [his, of course]. He plans to bring his Heavenly Manna to all the sinners and calls it Faith Based Initiatives. It would allow religious programs to compete with secular programs for government grants.

It means that big government is back with a vengeance -- in your face and up your wahzoo.

"One of Bush's faves: Let's use the churches to provide social services. (In W.'s policy world, churches are always 'faith-based institutions.' The words 'church' and 'religious' are never used.) That is not, actually, a totally terrible idea, except that it's unconstitutional and guaranteed to get screwed up in the execution. We've already tried it here in the National Laboratory for Bad Government -- aka Texas -- and that's what we learned."
                    -- Molly Ivins http://www.star-telegram.com/columnist/ivins2.htm

We've been remembering all the information that we heard about Dubya and his religious conversion. It seems that the naughty things he did before the conversion took effect were cancelled out by divine edict. Even most of the so-called "liberal" media is careful to avoid any discouraging word about pre-convert-Dubya.

Barbara Bush has stated publicly that son Dubya is the authority on religion and the Bible for her whole family. This suggests that his religious conversion dug deep roots into his ego. Actually we already knew that. He declared a few years back that everyone was going to hell except those who believed as he [Dubya] did. This upset his political handlers so much that they got Reverend Billy Graham to smarten him up politically. "George," he counseled, "we believe it, and you can think it, but to say it makes people think that you are judging who can get into heaven and only God can do that."

So Dubya kept his feelings about being chosen by God to himself after that. Everyone around him treated him really special. He was and still is the darling of the media. It took lots of money but, hell, the religious right Christian conservatives were loaded, Daddy and Mommy were loaded, brothers and sisters were loaded and there were all those great big donors in oil and big business. Of course all this just contributed even more to his already swollen head which reached gigantic proportions when the Supreme Court anointed him and he became the occupant of the Offal office.

The Bushies with their posse of ministers declare that church relief services will be kept separate from church religious services. Dubya says not to worry. He tells us that religion got him straightened out and described his experience as "a higher calling." Can't argue with a god complex like that, can we? Yeah, we can!

        • It sounds like double talk to us. How can Dubya push this program on the basis of HIS religious conversion and still claim that religion would not be involved in his Faith Based Initiatives?

        • Just as it is with all grants, the government will demand that records be kept and more people than ever will know all about you and your history. Laura Murphy (ACLU) warns that it would enable a church program to discriminate against women who have had abortions or those in a gay lifestyle because a church would not have to obey civil rights laws.

        • Reporter Helen Thomas asked 3 times in a news conference January 29, 2001 if Dubya had ever been in Alcoholics Anonymous and received no answer. Who does she think she is to question Heaven's and the Supreme's anointed one -- an honest reporter?

        • There will be damn few, if any, millionaires who take advantage of these Faith Based Programs. In fact Dubya's plans would impact those of the lower strata of our society. The Bushies claim that their proposal would make it illegal to discriminate (just like in other government funded programs such as in colleges or universities.) This means taking one's case to court, but how many people at poverty or near poverty level could afford to initiated or pursue a lawsuit?

        • Administration officials insist that no one would be forced to get help through a faith-based institution because there would always be a secular alternative. Since their hand picked group will decide who gets the funding, we know that it won't be given to secular groups such as Planned Parenthood or Women's Shelters or Women's Clinics.

You remember how we wrote that Dubya promised to be the president for all the AMERICAN people? It was a strange thing to say when he was doing things that did not reflect that statement. Now he has revealed that he does not consider us Americans. He calls all of the people in the LIFE SUPPORT groups that we wrote about -- LIBERAL ATTACK GROUPS.

Deal with it Dubya, opposition is not un-American!  Mixing church and state is.
