Here
we go again. It was not enough that the Repugnants in the Offal Office
brought on a stock market bellyache with their doom- and gloom-saying,
now they are hyping war. They are setting things up to do a
Ronald R with another "Star Wars" extravaganza.
What is important is the bottom line of the many corporations, which financed the campaign that put Cheney/Bush in charge. War and preparing for war is a lucrative proposition.
In a not-so-imaginary scenario, Maureen Doud quotes "Rummy" (Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld) talking to "Dick" (Cheney):
"We can stick it to the Russians, the Chinese and the North Koreans -- to say nothing of Daschle, Biden and Kerry. And think of all our buddies at Boeing! Think of the billions that will go to Lockheed, TRW, General Dynamics! Can you believe those pointy-heads on the ethics board want us to divest our portfolios?
"Missile defense may be pie in the sky, but our defense budget pie is, as the Kid [Dubya] likes to say, growing taller. Here's to the private sector we'll be back there some day. O'Neill wants us to make sure a lot of aluminum goes into the Emperor's New Shield." http://www.nytimes.com/2001/05/02/opinion/02DOWD.html
It didn't take 100 days of Cheney/Bush for most of us to know that they intended to wage war against women's reproductive rights. Molly Ivins listed what they did in her column titled, Let me Know How You're Better off Now:
"His first act was to cut off funding for international family planning groups that so much as mention abortion, presumably because he thinks the Third World needs more unwanted children." http://www.star-telegram.com/columnist/ivins2.htm
Because of that action, rejection of the Kyoto pact and other Cheney/Bush policies, the U.N. Human Rights Council, by a majority of friends and foes alike, has voted the United States off the U.N.H.R.C.
Recently we were "treated" to a new bill from the "rychus-ones" led by that Georgia Cracker, Graham. Under the guise of "protecting a wanted pregnancy of a woman," his bill would give citizen status and privileges to embryo and fetus. The claim was that this would allow extra punishment to anyone attacking a pregnant woman.
What
the bill did at the gitgo was allow the term unborn child to replace the
word fetus. No one even mentioned that we have a hate crime bill already
that could be adjusted to include pregnant women and by inference, their
fetus.
We were firmly told by many of the talking heads that fetus was not the word to use because women always referred to their pregnancy as "my baby." We heard no person argue that fetus is exactly the word to use in a medical situation.
A person does not commonly tell you she had a myocardial infarct or that he has a furuncle on his butt. These are medical terms for a heart attack and a boil respectively. Fetus is a medical term that should be used in situations that are or may be medically related. It is also explicit. A pregnant woman is NOT two people and her fetus is a part of her, not governmental property.
We, the voters, are the only force that has a chance of turning this administration from their chosen path of war. We heard Dubya boast that he would lead, not react to polls as he claimed Clinton did. Another lie, because when his drastic environmental missteps got an angry reaction from the voters, he changed his tune -- not completely, but he did react to the polls. He has also done 180o on some of his China pronouncements when we, the voters, reacted adversely.
Speak up to your Congressional Representatives and Senators. Write to your newspapers and spread the word to friends and family.
