THE COWBOY MESSIAH

Our Country had its ass handed to it on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. A small band of determined men used our own planes full of aviation fuel as bombs to destroy thousands of our people and inflicted terrible damage to our buildings. We are a country in mourning, but we are also a country in transition. Of course we are angry, our pride has been clobbered.

It follows that many are looking for revenge and want that revenge to come immediately. Cheney/Bush is using that feeling to whip up support for their “America’s New WAR” while downplaying the failure of their administration which fumbled this one badly as they concentrated on Star War Games.

In August, the Israeli Government informed our government that a major assault on the United States by terrorists was imminent. These warnings were ignored or mishandled by those in charge. The catastrophic events of September 11th followed. Remember, the stock market was tanking and the economy was slipping downward before the terrorist attacks.

Now, careless White House rhetoric is causing collateral damage. Already morons with a militia mind set have killed several people (including a Native American) because they resembled “the enemy” our government is going to war against. We are told the country is united in support of the White House, but the past performance of this administration makes many of us nervous, very nervous.

Marc Ash writes, “As we begin to recover our senses, it may be wise to recover our senses…

“We will rid the world of evil-doers,” Dubya promised. Sounds to us like an impossible task but maybe not. Since he will decide who the evil doers are, he can knock off whoever doesn’t fit his particular “born-again” profile. See: http://www.gendergappers.org/1999-052.htm

Then with spurs a-rattling, he reminded his listeners of justice in the old West - “bring him (Osama bin Laden) back dead or alive.” Coming very close to declaring a Holy War, Dubya promised a “Christian Style Crusade” -- his very own Jihad (Holy War.)

Not to be outdone, King Herod/Cheney shows he is still the headman. When Mr. Cheney was asked if he would like the suspect's head "on a platter," he replied: "I would take it today." He didn’t even need the prompting of a dancing girl.

When Dubya’s injudicious, politically incorrect remarks were questioned, Dubya’s counselor, Karen Hughes, said, “I think what you’re seeing is that people are seeing a lot more of him than they normally would. I mean, let’s face it, what they normally see is a seven-second sound bite. Now they’re seeing his entire conversation.” Huh?

Other White House officials gave three reasons for the change in Dubya’s style and rhetoric:

        • They hadn’t had time to script him.
        • He was now more comfortable speaking off the cuff.
        • His advisors had planned all along to let him act naturally.

Whatever the excuse, we note that Dubya’s advisors and media have come forth to tell us what he really meant by his natural remarks. For example, he meant campaign, not crusade. We are neither comforted nor reassured.

What really concerns us is that we have heard not one word of praise for the Democrats in Congress who have left politics behind to completely support this war effort. We remember how the Republicans carped and criticized another president in his “wars” to fight terrorism in places like Bosnia.

November 8, 2000We should be praising these Democratic leaders and the women and men of the American armed forces who will bare the brunt of causalities. We should be praising those of the emergency and security services who will be working to protect us here at home. Instead, we only hear praise for Dubya and the speech that was written by others that only proved he could read it from a teleprompter. Now the Republican spin is that Dubya’s speech “was Churchillian.” Gawd!

The marching boots and the rhetoric that proclaims, “if you aren’t praising Dubya, you are against America and God” have defined patriotism and prayer. There is no room allowed for contrary opinions.

If Clinton were still president, we would be hearing the full-throated cry of the media bellowing, “Wag the dog.” Instead the administration and media are united in their constant efforts to characterize Dubya as the Second Coming a New Messiah to go along with “America’s New War.”
