UNDER THE RADAR

The news these days is composed of a constant rehash of the Bushies’ police action and its companion threat, the anthrax escalation. However, if one looks closely one can find other important news items women should be aware of that slip in under the censor’s radar.

Does it really depend on WHO gets threatened with anthrax before Attorney General Ashcroft acts? http://www.truthout.com/10.27B.Boxer.Ashcroft.htm

Excerpt from Senator Barbara Boxer’s letter to Ashcroft:

“I write with regard to recent acts of domestic terrorism at more than 130 women's health clinics nationwide. As you know, women's health clinics and providers have received anthrax threats for many years. Now, individuals or groups are capitalizing on the climate of fear produced by anthrax attacks in the U.S. and sending out a new round of anthrax threats to abortion clinics.”

Some news events are not deemed important enough to be reported on TV anymore but there is much going on that affect women. It may be found on the talk shows or hiding in the folds of newspapers or lurking silently on the net waiting to be discovered like the following:

        WOMEN OFF FRONT LINES
        Sat Oct 20 2001 14:32:19 ET
WASHINGTON -- As the Pentagon brass prepares for the Afghan ground war, the administration is reconsidering--and will most likely kill--Clinton-era proposals to put women into battle zones, US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT claims in fresh editions.
"That's all changing," a senior Defense official tells the magazine set for publication on Monday. Frontline "units won't involve women, adds another Pentagon big. And that's in Afghanistan or anywhere else. What's more, Bush appointees are planning to sideline the organization that fought to put women closer to the frontlines.
"They will slowly be minimalized and marginalized," says the Pentagon official about the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services. The switch comes at a critical time, since the Army is creating new reconnaissance and surveillance units open to women, despite a tradition of keeping female troops out of firefight zones. The change represents a victory for brass who opposed the Clinton rules and the private Center for Military Readiness, which has fought applying political correctness to the Pentagon. But turning the ship has just begun: Center boss Elaine Donnelly says many of the Clinton rules are unknown to the Bushies.
It is especially important for the Bushies to get women out of the military right now. Wouldn’t it be a terrible thing if our country found out that women are competent fighters and heroes? Rulers of countries have known for eons that the best way to control women is to make them feel insecure and in need of the government’s [male] protection. Once cowed by fear they never notice what their government is putting over on them. How can the Bushies foster that image of the helpless female alongside an image of women warriors?

The continued demonizing of Hillary and Bill Clinton by the Rychus ones takes precedence even over the war news. The gutter media was quick to chortle that Senator Hillary Clinton was loudly booed (as was actor, Richard Gere), despite the fact that many who attended the recent benefit in New York reported that only a few drunken fire and policemen in the audience did the booing. Those bawdy individuals were near the stage and the microphones.

Certainly the police and firemen are heroes for what they did at the WTC, but that does not excuse the boorish and disgusting behavior of some of them. Do the Rychus ones really approve of how that played with the kiddies? Great role models for decent behavior, they were not. Family values anyone?

We are also hearing in glowing terms about one of the heroes who spoke. He invited Osma bin Laden to “kiss his royal Irish ass.” Well, fine, if he had just stopped there it would have been the usual sophomoric rant. But he went on to angrily call bin Laden, “BITCH!” We all know just what that pejorative term means -- it means woman. That’s positively the most insulting name a man can be called.

Talk shows have always been derogatory toward the women in President Clinton’s cabinet. Callers usually refer to these women as lesbians along with Hillary. Now they are claiming that Madeline Albright and Janet Reno had been running the country since Bill wasn’t, and that is why bin Laden was not captured and punished. 9/11, they accuse, was all the fault of Clinton and those women he let run the government.

Did you know that only one member of Congress had the courage to oppose the Bushies in their rush for power - a woman!

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- More than 3,000 people rallied behind U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee, the only member of Congress to oppose a resolution granting President Bush authority to use force against terrorists. "We must be careful not to embark on an open-ended war with neither an exit strategy nor a focused target,” Lee told her colleagues last month. http://www.truthout.com/10.23.lee.htm
Our own home grown Fundamentalists-terrorists-wannabes are gearing up for the next election. Read about them and their political goals in: Christian Reconstructionists Launch "Operation Potomac." Excerpt:
“Reconstructionist believe the Bible allows liberal application of the death penalty for crimes including homosexuality, abortion, adultery, child disobedience, and witchcraft. Acceptable forms of capital punishment supposedly outlined in the Bible include burning, stoning, and hanging. Slavery is also acceptable, according to Reconstructionists…” http://www.feminist.org/news/newsbyte/uswirestory.asp?id=5870
Finally, just for a little humor, education and enlightenment, we went way down under the radar and found these two very short and very educational games. Try them, it will only take a couple of minutes of your time: http://www.markfiore.com/animation/fresh.html.
