Americans
are said to love royalty as long as it is not theirs. Way back in the 1700s,
they threw the bum out. King George the 3rd, that is. But no
matter. For all intents and purposes, America was lumbered with its own
King George, aka, Bush the 2nd, just last January, courtesy of the Supreme
Court.
Constitutionally, his anointing was pretty ragged. But no matter. B2 got the crowning touch and went to live in the White Castle mostly due to the efforts of his brother, Prince Jeb Bush of Florida.
Once ensconced, he behaved like the royals of old. He became a law unto himself, ignoring world opinion, Congress, assorted Chiefs of Police, State Governors and their constituencies.
His ascension to the throne was not approved by over half of the country, but a done deal was a done deal so mostly the people put up with it until the day of the BIG FEAR. National pride had been pummeled and trampled on. Bush2 and his Court promised revenge. All the king's horses and all the king's men were galvanized into action in a far away land.
Here at home, B2 acted pretty much like G3 except that where G3 demanded more taxes from everyone, B2 demanded tax cuts for the rich and Star Wars missals. Most of the frightened American people were delighted that they were going to open a can of whup-ass on Osama, and get money back on their taxes so they cried out, "Way to go, George!"
So B2 went -- his way, further and further. He declared war and usurped the powers given to the throne only when Congress declared war. He was aided and abetted, of course, by his faithful squire, John of Ashcroft. Together they plotted in secrete to take over more and more of the people's prerogatives and Constitutional protections.
They used the town criers of the lap-dog media to keep the public hatred and thirst for revenge at overload. So only a few of the public noticed, but those few soon turned into many. They saw the danger and spoke out. For this they were condemned and booed by frightened and insecure people who cannot stand to hear opinions of others.
John of Ashcroft took immediate offense and charged critics of B2's policies with giving aid and comfort to terrorists -- a high crime. Here are just a few of a variety of Americans that meet the requirements for Ashcroft's "Imperial Most Wanted" criminals.
Former
President, Jimmy Carter -- "President Bush's order authorizing
military tribunals for suspected terrorists threatens to undermine the
United State's reputation for justice and its ability to promote peace."
Conservative
columnist, William Safire -- "Polls show terrorized Americans
willing to subvert our Constitution to hold Soviet-style secret military
trials. No presumption of innocence; no independent juries; no right to
choice of counsel; no appeal to civilian judges for aliens suspected of
being in touch with terrorists."
Slate
Magazine's Jacob Weisberg -- "To describe genuine concern
about the loss of liberties as a scare 'tactic' imputes ill motivation
without any evidence to Ashcroft's legitimate critics on both the left
and the right."
Texas
Star Telegram's Molly Ivins
-- "With all due respect, of course, and God Bless America too, has
anyone considered the possibility that the attorney general is becoming
unhinged?" http://web.star-telegram.com/content/fortworth/columnist/molly_ivins.htm
General
Wesly Clark (retired) -- who fearlessly opposes B2's proposed
use of Military tribunals because "they are NOT under the codes of
military justice" as Ashcroft has claimed.
60
Minutes' Andy Rooney is very outspoken about his feelings.
He roundly condemned the actions of both B2 and Sir John recently on the
Imus show. Most of the large audience booed him but he didn^Òt back
down a whit.

The
Senator from Vermont, Patrick Leahy as chair of the Senate Judicial
Committee made Sir Ashcroft come before his committee for questioning.
This resulted in Sir Ashcroft backing off somewhat from his dictatorial
plans.
Last
but not least are the Self-defined Women with Chakrums all over
the world that won't be stifled. Columnist for The Boston Globe,
Ellen Goodman, reports that B2 and company talk out of both sides of their
mouths. From one side they pretend to insist on the importance of the liberation
of Afghani women; from the other they allow the sexist treatment of a top
US military officer, Lt. Col. Martha McSally in Saudi Arabia. "No
Freedom for US Women on Saudi Soil." http://www.boston.com/globe/columns/goodman/
When there is Good Will toward WOMEN, there will be Peace on Earth.
