THE BULLY IN THE PULPIT

President Theodore Roosevelt declared the White House to be a "bully pulpit." He meant that it was a great vehicle to advocate an agenda and ideas. Roosevelt used the word "bully" as an adjective meaning superb/wonderful. Lordy, lordy, how Dubya has changed the meaning.

Hardly a day passes that the media does not allot hours of time to the Republican Party for fund raising, threats and accusations against the Democrats as it covers Bush like a second skin.

Under the guise of the "Bully Pulpit," Bush travels the country in a very expensive airplane, paid for by all the taxpayers, to raise money for Republican candidates. Like all bullies, he coerces through threats. He brings forth the specter of the evil, evil doers raining death and destruction down upon everyone.

At each stop, he criticizes the Democrats and calls their leaders unpatriotic and asserts that they care nothing for the safety of the American people. He insinuates that anyone who is against his agenda is with the evil doers. http://www.richardhenzel.com/drydrunk.htm

This has been going on for some time and finally some in the media are waking up. They are asking the tough questions of the Bushies they failed to ask ever since the imperial-appointed presidency began in January of 2001.

Questions relating to the loss of many of our rights and liberty; questions relating to the Bushie war policy and questions about their many lies and threats. The Bushie responses are orchestrated to bully the questioner.

Whenever the Bushies are called on anything they say, "that might be correct in normal times, but you're forgetting 9/11 -- the world changed." They slip out of all the corners with that phrase because the media made it an incontrovertible mantra and invincible shield by constant repetition.

The fact is that the Bush administration screwed up badly and let 9/11 happen so now they are doing everything they can to keep the public's mind away from thinking about that by raising fears and planning to invade Iraq. Their war on terrorism lost speed when they failed to find Osma and they needed another dog to wag.

They are very disturbed about all the information coming out now in the congressional investigation so they keep mudding the water by telling us we are in dire danger of germ warfare and atom bombs from Iraq.

This fear tactic is thought to be especially effective with women, but the bully goes even further with misinformation designed to appeal to women voters. They speak of setting the women of Iraq free as they did for the women of Afghanistan.

Remember back when Laura and Cherie joined Tony and George to tell of the plight of the Afghani women? They spoke of their great concern for these women and how they would be freed from the Taliban by the war. While it is true that many Afghani women are now allowed to go to school, most of them are still oppressed by the warlords supported by the Bushies. They are simply ignoring these women's plight as they rush headlong into a war with Iraq. Concern for women is not now and never was on the Bush agenda.

Is anyone surprised? We've painfully learned that Bush is not a feminist. He is out to destroy women's reproductive rights. Just recently he has classified the fetus as an unborn child. It's needs superceding those of the woman who is carrying it.

The Bushies claim that this was done so that poor mothers could get pre-natal care, but that is another Bushie lie. A few lines of the existing law could have been easily changed to provide this care. In addition, there was no money appropriated for this and most states are cutting their health care budgets.

        • Bush's 2002 proposed budget sought to cut the Maternal and Child Health Block Grants that provide health care to women before, during and after pregnancy, and to freeze the Healthy Start program, which has been shown to reduce infant mortality and morbidity.

        • He cut off funding to any international family-planning organizations that offer abortion services or counseling - this cruelly affected third world women.

        • He renamed January 22 - the anniversary of Roe vs Wade that permitted abortion on demand -- as National Sanctity of Human Life Day and compared abortion to terrorism. http://www.thetruthaboutgeorge.com/women/

Columnist Dave Broder in a piece titled, Bush's actions contradict his words, warned, "watch what he does, not what he says."

He's right. Bullies don't deal honestly face to face. They make false promises and then sneak around, do things in secret and bite you in the ass.
