| Interesting, isn't it, how two women in the
government of different countries made a casual remark that tipped the
world on edge. Are women more perspicacious
than men? Probably, but they are also examined more closely and
judged by a sharper standard than men.
The German woman, Justice Minister Herta Daeubler-Gmelin was excoriated for allegedly comparing Bush to Hitler. However, unbiased reports show that she really made an innocuous remark about politicians who used foreign policy measures to distract from domestic issues. Francoise Ducros, an aid to Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretein, made a much shorter private comment that was heard by several reporters. She said about Bush, "What a moron." Again, the excrement hit the spinner and the woman resigned her position. More proof that the GOPers are very tender in areas relating to the Bush mentality. Of course another Bushie sore spot is the plethora of articles that relate the Bushie agenda to fascism -- the f-word is again making an appearance. Some writers openly compare the Nazi regime to the Bush regime. Strange to relate, the Bushies ignore conservative writers who make this connection but yell, UN-AMERICAN at liberal writers saying the same thing. One hears the same sort of selective awareness from pro-Republican talking heads. George Will, on the Imus program, went on for some time using personal destructive phrases to trash a whole group of Democrats from President Clinton to Al Gore to Senator Daschle. Then in the next breath he complained bitterly about Democrats and claimed that they were being partisan and personal against Republicans, "using politics of personal destruction." Exactly what he had previously spent several minutes doing himself to Democrats. Obviously, the Bushies have tender spots that are irritated by reports about Bush's mentality and his administration's U.S. and world political agenda. As mentioned, even some Republicans are increasingly upset at the direction the Bushies are taking. Some say the Bush Government is "out of control." http://www.truthout.org/docs_02/11.25B.repb.bush.out.htm This November, American voters gave the Bushies both houses of congress to go along with the power he already had in the executive, judicial and most of the media. They did this mostly by not voting. Now it appears he intends to become a virtual dictator as he sets forth to destroy the environment, women's reproductive rights, and pay off his campaign doners.
Molly Ivins minces no words on the totalitarian direction the Bushies are taking with the Poindexter appointment and reminds us of Orwell's 1984. She quoted Bush's announcement "we must fight a war for the sake of peace" and noted that it was a direct steal from Orwell. http://www.dfw.com/mld/startelegram/news/columnists/molly_ivins/4594729.htm The Eugene, Oregon city council takes still another approach. http://www2.kval.com/ How do we counter this menacing totalitarian-creep? Money talks! It would be positive and helpful if those who can get the attention of the mass media use their clout to warn voters of the high costs of war. Or, call everyone's attention loud and often to the fact that the state governments face a $40 billion 2003 deficit -- the worst since WWII with the Bushie's WWIII waiting in the wings to drain us dry. Or the millions of $$ in taxes lost under the Bush supported corporate way of doing business by rewarding contracts to those who went off shore to avoid paying taxes. Or what will happen to social security when it is sunk into the Bushie's stock market. Or what loss of privacy will mean to everyone -- not just women. It's about time that liberals, and all Americans concerned for their constitutional rights, circled their wagons instead of their firing squads. Our country is in deep do-do and cannot take another four years of totalitarianism-creep. 2002-050
