Remember
how we were told the Iraqi people would greet our troops with open arms,
showering them with flowers and kisses? Remember
how for a couple of days we were shown pictures of that happening?
Then reality set in and Iraqis told us
thanks a lot, now get out. Gosh, how could they treat us this way when
we liberated them? We shed blood so they could be free. We're the good
guys; everybody knows that, er, don't they?
Now, the children who were waving the
Stars and Stripes, given them by the G.I.s, are throwing stones. Riots
have broken out and we are shooting Iraqi civilians claiming that they
shot at us first.
Whatever is the problem here? The problem
is they have seen and heard for several years the same thing many of us
have seen, heard and experienced. They do not believe what America says
about anything. Unfortunately for us, they do
not distinguish between America (which includes you and me) and the Bushites.
We tend to forget
that most Iraqis had TV and radio before our bombs destroyed them.
They have heard all about American
democracy, especially the recent voting debacle in Florida. They have heard
how a dark skinned portion of the electorate was deprived of their voting
rights.
They've heard about chads and butterfly
ballots and Supreme Courts and brother governors and Katherine Harris and
that the person who now lives in the White House believes he was chosen
by God.
They have followed the antics of America
on the national scene and noted how Bush, representing America, thumbed
his nose at the World Court, the European Union and the United Nations.
Empire America is saying the same words that the British Empire did when
it invaded Iraq. "We come to liberate not to occupy." Then they
stayed 40 years.
As TV and other media are restored, Iraqis
avidly tune in to the news from America. Many seek out reporters to tell
the world how they feel. Their comments echo the following:
If America invaded
and bombed the hell out of our country just to liberate but not conqueror
us why was the American flag flown on several occasions when territory
was won?
If America invaded and bombed the hell
out of our country just to liberate us then why
did their military rush to guard all the oil operations and
leave the rest of our country at the mercy of looters?
If America invaded and bombed the hell
out of our country just to liberate us then why
is Bush taking VICTORY LAPS around the United States military bases
and boasts of kicking Iraqi ass -- "Hoo Ra!"?
If America invaded and bombed the hell
out of our country just to liberate us why is Bush
going around the U.S. making political speeches that brag about
his conquest of Iraq?
If America invaded and bombed the hell
out of our country just to let us choose our leaders in a free, democratic
election than why does conquering hero Rummy strut around our country and
say OUR "free choice" of government must be what America wants?
Of
course the Iraqi people have valid reasons not to trust America. Like us
they have been Janus Bush-watchers, and are daily presented with more examples
that the face that speaks (fiction) usually is not the face that acts (fact.)
Fiction:
The White House announced that the aircraft carrier, USS Abraham Lincoln,
was too far out to sea for Bush to fly to it by helicopter. So he had to
take a fighter jet and land on the deck strewn with fawning reporters.
Fact: The
carrier was only 30 miles out from land, well within range of a helicopter.
In fact it was slowed down to near stop so the cowboy could take another,
well publicized victory lap. It was pure grandstanding to obtain photos
for the upcoming election.
