Now
who was that guy who was going to bring honor and integrity back to the
White House?
Is this the same guy who was in Africa
when his lies became public and got so flustered that the response to the
charges came from "a senior administration official" in Washington?
Surely more and more evidence is piling up that Cheney and Rove are the
ones who actually run things.
Their excrement has been hitting the fan
so often in the last few weeks that even the media is beginning to smell
it. Will the media finally break off its love affair with Bush?
Lawrence O'Donnell of Saturday Final,
said straight out that Bush was unable to read and comprehend intelligence
reports bringing back to life the "Bush is too stupid to be president"
claim seen on many web sites.
Even HardBall's Chris Matthews
compared Bush to brainless but loveable Ted Baxter (Mary Tyler Moore
Show), who uncomprehendingly read what Lou and Mary wrote for him.
Other commentators have proffered the Pinocchio comparisons. As the Bush
lies get more frequent can his nose be growing apace?
Whatever. It is great to see some of the
reporters pulling back from the almost universal exercise of their ilk,
kissing Bush's patootie. We are hearing things
like, "Bush isn't a leader, he's a mis-leader."
And well-deserved kudos to the very few
like Paul Begala on Crossfire, who has continued to tell us the truth about
Bush despite the heckling he gets. His latest: "You can tell when
Bush is lying, his lips move."
Still, Bush's lies and synaptic misfires
persist. Sitting beside the UN Secretary General, Kofii Annan, at a news
conference this week, Bush asserted that he had to invade Iraq because
Saddam would not let the UN inspectors in.
Who doesn't remember that the inspectors
were already in? Saddam did allow them in, but Bush refused to wait for
them to complete their inspections. He would not wait because he was determined
to invade Iraq and secure the oil wells.
Republicans are no longer smiling and
making jokes about the Democratic candidates as they face the TV news reporters.
They are acting pious, crying "foul"
and accusing the Democrats of playing politics. Their guy lies at least
twice in a State of the Union Speech and they blame the Democrats for noticing.
FAUX News consternation is a riot, not
unlike their fevered rebuttals. Bush's nuclear comment was of no consequence,
they whine, because Iraq had to be invaded to unseat a horrible dictator
who had killed thousands of Iraqi people and he had to be stopped.
So how does that make it right for Bush
to kill thousands of Iraqi people when he invaded their country? It doesn't.
It just gives more weight to the fact that Bush lied to scare Americans
into believing they were about to be facing a nuclear attack.
The WMD nuclear threat was never so great
or as eminent as bush tried to make it. This is why the buzz is still loud
as reporters continue to uncover things that have been right before their
eyes.
Ari Fleischer, recently retired White
House press secretary, gave a going-away speech this week. He praised the
White House reporters and proclaimed that, in effect, our democracy was
kept vital and honest by the fact that they served to see that citizens
kept tract of their government.
How those reporters could hear that and
still keep a straight face was a wonder. Of course, both they and Ari had
more than three years of practice. Will the reporters continue to do their
jobs? We can only hope and trust they will dig deeper into this and other
matters they have ignored.
Will
the media give Bush still another Mulligan for this latest group of lies
or are we seeing a breakup of this unholy, unhealthy and unspeakable alliance?
Don't count on it. Cheney is revving up his powerful, heavily financed
spin machine and bringing back Mary (the cut of a thousand knives) Matalin
to drive it.
The finger pointing and ass covering will
go into high gear in the White House as the occupants furiously seek to
find ways of putting all the blame on former President Clinton.
