That's
the word, optimism! -- the plaintive plea
we hear from the Republicans now. They are whining with their usual supersized
virtue in full flower -- be positive, upbeat. Really funny for a group
that largely runs negative campaign ads. One cannot help but be moved to
hear State's Colin Powell plead with our media to stop just announcing
bombings, beheadings and bawdy prison tactics. He wants it to concentrate
on all the good things brought to Iraq like schools and electricity. Optimism
should rule.
Leading up to and during the first phase of the Iraq war, many in the media according to Richard Reeves (20/20 Hindsight in Iraq,) now admit:It is as if a Pavlovian president controlled most of the press into believing this: "I am the only president you have. I know things you will never know. I don't say these things are true. These things are true because I say them." Little rebuilding of important facilities has been accomplished in Iraq. That in fact, many places are worse off than they were under Saddam. How dare they show such pessimism? Then there are the Iraqi who point to homes bombed by us with many lives lost. They say these were not terrorist; they were relatives, friends or neighbors. How dare they show such pessimism when they are getting all those hospitals, schools and electricity? The Bush administration wants us to only hear that information gotten from Iraqi and Afghanistan prisoners saved limbs and lives. They think that how they got that information is none of our business. Still being optimistic, they tell us we are fighting the terrorists in Iraq so we do not have to fight them here. But it is confusing because they keep telling us that terrorists may attack us here in the U.S. at any time. Even now as we write, Homeland Security's Tom Ridge is feverishly warning us that al Quida intends to terrorize our political conventions. Perhaps it is just that we do not understand optimism. Or maybe optimism is a word like patriotism. We all know now that patriotism does not mean love of country as we thought. Rather, it means going along blindly with whatever the Bush war machine decides to do. So whatever country it wants to invade, we just agree with whatever reasons they have for the invasion. It means that sending our young women and men into harm^Òs way must not be questioned or debated. It means we accept any and all casualties of preemptive war. It means acceptance of the Bush policy that the war dead are not honored but are quickly swept out of sight and into their graves. Then there is that word "blame." We remember President Harry Truman took it. He had a sign on his desk that read, "The buck stops here." He did NOT pass the buck but assumed responsibility for his administration. Recently blame was passed when the CIA got blamed for not giving the Bushies the info that there were NO WMD in Iraq. Interesting, isn't it, since several people have testified that the Bushies didn't want to hear anything that contradicted their contention that Saddam had WMD's. The leaking of the name of an FBI agent obviously came from the tippity-top of the Bush administration, but the buck on that is still being passed around still to hot for honesty. Actually we should have expected this since Bush has admitted that he does not make mistakes and has not assumed responsibility or even acknowledged those allegedly made by members of his administration. Inflation and higher interest rates didn't used to be words of joy but now it seems they are being used by the Bushies to make it appear that the national debt is being reduced. Meanwhile women's reproductive rights are taking a stealth hit. Church once again imposes itself to negate state's laws. Don't wait until your drugstore turns you away when you ask for contraceptives. Be optimistic and vote. Blame the religious blather and the rage that the Bushies have laid on this land. http://www.prevention.com/cda/feature2002/0,2479,s1-7342,00.html 2004-028 Copyright 2004 Renee T. Louise and Ruth M.
