It's hard to believe that 2004 has ended. We all had such high hopes for
a change in the White House. Not just Liberals/Progressives/Independents
in the U.S., but people all over the world.
Mother Earth gave many indications in 2004 that She was very disturbed with the way humankind was treating Her. As the richest country, as the greatest polluter, America should have taken the leadership in environmental conservation. Instead, the Bushies increased industry's abilities to pollute by eliminating or softening anti-pollution laws at home and spreading its pollution to the rest of the world. In Iraq alone the constant bombing and contaminated bullets continue to irritate Mother Earth still further. No matter what part of the world you live in, you must have observed the ferocity of the weather or at least read about it. Where there were always summer storms, they increased in strength and frequency. Remember the four hurricanes in Florida this year? In areas that needed rain there were long lasting droughts. In areas where winter snow and low temperatures are a yearly occurrence, heavy snow and blizzards alternated with below zero temperatures hanging in for days at a time. Europe is experiencing deadly hot summers. All areas around the globe are affected by pollution and policies of destruction that can be laid at the door of the uncaring, profit and power-motivated Bush administration. We agree with those who say that pollution is not the whole cause of climate changes. Of course there have been cycles throughout the eons where regions cool down or heat up, but most everyone has noted that pollution is speeding up a process that can destroy our world. Recently earthquakes and tsunami in Southern Asia took over 100,000 lives and still counting. The cause is not believed to be connected to pollution, but no one can disprove the possibility that Mother Earth is royally pissed off at us Earthlings crapping all over Her. Our present government, which never admits to mistakes, will lay the blame for this horrible catastrophe on an "ACT OF GOD". It is axiomatic that religions lay all their acts onto God so they can avoid responsibility. In the recent presidential election, GOPpers/Conservatives/the rychus ones prayed for a Bush victory. They believe it came from God. It seems a stretch, but they actually think Bush is supported by, does His will and actually speaks to God, but for a moment, let's consider it to be true. It would mean that all the killing and horror Bush causes in Iraq is an act of God. It would mean that pollution is an act of God. It would mean that depriving the elderly of Social Security, Medicare and Senior Centers are acts of God just for starters. Was even the Red Sox's victory this year an act of God? Yes, climates changes do cycle over the eons but some things never change. Religion does not belong in politics. It belongs in the human heart where it can make the world better instead of planning how to destroy it. Way back in the 60's, a TV sitcom burst upon the conscience of the world. All of our racial, gender and religious prejudices were mercilessly acted out in ALL IN THE FAMILY. http://www.museum.tv/archives/etv/A/htmlA/allinthefa/allinthefa.htm It seemed for awhile that we as a society were cycling out of those prejudices yet many of the rerunning early episodes still have the same ability to point up our hypocrisy as the rychus insist that religion must rule politics. What once pricked our collective social conscience over 40 years ago still bites. Catch the reruns on the TVland channel in your area and watch Archie Bunker demonstrate the mentality of the majority in the red states. 2005-001 Copyright 2005 Renee T. Louise and Ruth M.
